Rev. William H Craumer

(3 September 1829 - 4 June 1899)
      Rev. William H Craumer was also known as Cramer. He was born on 3 September 1829 at Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania.1,2 He was was converted and received into the fellowship of the United Brethren Church at Ehrhart's Paper Mill, a short distance north of Dallastown.2 He married Catherine Sterner, daughter of John Sterner Sr. and Elizabeth Kessler, on 2 December 1852.2 Rev. William H Craumer was a shoe maker in 1860.3 In 1860, Rev. William H Craumer and Catherine Sterner appeared on the Federal Census of Codorus Twp., York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning $750 in real estate and $175 in personal property. Their children Elias S, Lucinda F, Mary Jane and Sarah Elizabeth were listed as living with them.3 Rev. William H Craumer was in military service on 25 April 1861 as a Sergeant with Company A, 13th Infantry Regiment, PA (Union).4 He ended military service on 6 August 1861 at Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, Pennsylvania. He mustered out from Company A, 13th Infantry Regiment, PA (Union) with Distinguished Service.4 He was received as a licentiate into the Pennsylvania Conference, which was presided over by Bishop J. Markwood. on 24 January 1865 at Baltimore City, Maryland.2 On 26 January 1868 Rev. William H Craumer appointed to the Dallastown and Jefferson circuit, which he served a few years, then the Liverpool circuit (6 years), Dallastown circuit (4 years), Manchester circuit (1 year), and labored some in the bounds of the East German Conference. During the early years of his ministry, he was a successful revialist. In his later years, he was frequently called upon to visit the sick, baptize children, and preach funeral sermons. He was very social in his natural disposition, by which he made and held many friends.2 He was ordained to the office of elder by Bishop J.J. Glossbrenner at a Conference Session help in the First U.B. Church in York, PA on 26 January 1868.2 He was a preacher with the U.B. Church in 1870.5 In 1870, Rev. William H Craumer and Catherine Sterner appeared on the Federal Census of Manchester Twp, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning no real estate and $400 in personal property. Catherine could read but could not write. Their children Alice, Anna Lovina, Elias S, Emma A, Ida Lillie, Lucinda F, Margaret, Mary Jane and Sarah Elizabeth were listed as living with them.5 Rev. William H Craumer was a clergyman in 1880.6 In 1880, Rev. William H Craumer and Catherine Sterner appeared on the Federal Census of Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Also living in the household: Alice Craumer, Anna Lovina Craumer, Harry Craumer, Margaret Craumer and William H Craumer.6 Rev. William H Craumer died on 4 June 1899 at age 69; of heart failure (sudden death), but had failing health for several years which had obliged him to retire from active ministry work.2,7 His funeral services were held in the First U.B. Church in York, PA, officiated by Rev. C.T. Stearn.2 His obituary in the New Oxford Item (June 9th) referred to him as a highly respected citizen of York.7 He was buried on 7 June 1899 at Greenmount Cemetery, Codorus Twp., York County, Pennsylvania.1

In 1860,Catherine Crist and Michael Feather appeared on the Federal Census of Clairville, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning $300 of real estate and $100 of personal property.. Their children Ephriam, William Franklin and Joseph Giles were listed as living with them.2 In 1900,Catherine Crist and Michael Feather appeared on the Federal Census of Union Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania.3 Catherine Crist died on 12 August 1908 at Pavia, Bedford County, Pennsylvania, at age 77.
