Puzzle # The Question Is ...
Who was Jackson McComas? He was born around 1820 in Maryland, and died on 20 Dec 1895. He was buried in Hampstead Cemetery. Yet despite researching over 250 McComas family members from Maryland, how Jackson fits into the McComas lineage is a mystery. Who were his parents? Was Jackson a nickname that became the only name anyone remembered him by? It is known that he served in the Union Army in the Civil War but all his military records refer to him as Jackson, and as he was already married, they say nothing about his parents.
What happened to 9 1/2 acres of a plot of land called "Grape Spring"? Phillip Heir received a land warrant from the Province of Maryland on 16 Nov 1759 for 22 1/2 acres located near the Great Falls of the Gunpowder River in Baltimore County. He later had it surveyed and patented as "Grape Spring", always listed at the same acreage. His son, Christophel Hare, must have inherited it upon Phillip's death in 1772, as he begins to show up on tax and land records in 1773. On Dec 20, 1788, Christophel sells 13 acres of "Grape Spring" to John Foster. There is no further record of the remaining 9 1/2 acre. While acreage numbers historically varied, this represents almost 50% of the original tract unaccounted for.
Who are the children of George E Roberts and his wife Mary Cordelia Lake? They were married around 1930 and lived in Baltimore City, Maryland. He was an electrician, and prior to her marriage, she was a librarian at the Enoch Pratt Library. I have been told they had a "lot of children". However, I am only aware of 3 daughters -- Cordelia E, Lydia Anne, and Dorothy Marie.
What was the cause of death for David Runkle and his brother Jonathan? They died Jan 28th and Jan 27th, 1879, respectively. Jonathan was reported in several census records as being a lunatic who lived with his brother. Given the closeness of their deaths, was it a shared illness or some type of accident?
Where were Issac Vetter's two sons born? I was told his first son, Jacob Fetter, was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania on 15 Apr 1749, and his second son, Henry Fetter, was born in Holland in 1756. However, I was also told his father, Issac Vetter, immigrated from Baden Germany to Union Township in Bedford County on 25 Sept 1749. Although not impossible, it seems strange that his first son was born in Pennsylvania while his father was still in Germany; and his second son was born in Holland years after his father came to the states.
