On 20 January 1845 Jackson McComas appeared in the record of insolvent (bankruptcy) indentures, with Michael G Webster as his trustee in Carroll County, Maryland.3 In 1850, Jackson McComas appeared on the census in 6th District, Baltimore County, Maryland, in the household of James McCullough.2 In 1850 Jackson McComas was a farmer.2 He and Sarah McCullough appeared in the census in 1860 in Pikesville, Baltimore County, Maryland, listed as having $200 in personal property. James A McComas, Eliza Jane McComas, Thomas McComas, George W McComas, and Charles F McComas were living in the household with their parents.4 In 1860 Jackson McComas was a farmer.4 He began military service on 30 August 1862 in Baltimore, Maryland, enrolling for 3 years with the Union as a Private in Company E of the 2nd Regiment Eastern Shore Maryland Infantry.5,6,7,8,9 On 31 October 1862 Jackson McComas was a messenger in Pungoteague, Accomack County, Virginia.9 On 11 April 1863 Jackson McComas was present on the muster roll as a private in Company E, 2nd Regiment, Eastern Shore, Maryland Infantry.9 On 31 May 1863 Jackson McComas was detached to [L] as a guard with prisoners in Baltimore, Maryland.9 Between July 1863 and August 1863 Jackson McComas was promoted to Corporal of the 8th squad of Company E, 2nd Regimentof the Eastern Shore, Maryland Infantry.9 In September 1863 Jackson McComas was detached as a teamster in the Quartermaster's Department in Sandy Hook, Washington County, Maryland.9,9 Between November 1863 and August 1864 Jackson McComas was shown as absent as a Corporal of the 8th squad on the muster roll of Company E, 2nd regiment, with a note saying he was detached as a teamster in the Quartermaster's Department in Sandy Hook, Washington County, Maryland.9,9 Between 18 December 1863 and November 1864 Jackson McComas was reported as sick in the Hospital in Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland.9 On 31 May 1864 Jackson McComas was given orders to be sent to Martinsburg VA in Sandy Hook, Washington County, Maryland.9 Between September 1864 and October 1864 Jackson McComas reappeared as present on his unit's muster roll (Corporal of the 8th Squad, Company E, 2nd regiment of the Eastern Shore Maryland Infantry.)9 On 30 November 1864, Jackson McComas was reduced from Corpl to Private while sick.9 Between November 1864 and December 1864 Jackson McComas was listed as sick in the Hospital (Corp. 8th Squad, Co E, 2 Reg't, E.Shore, MD Infantry) in Sandy Hook, Washington County, Maryland.9 On 27 December 1864 Jackson McComas was transferred out of Company E of the 2nd Regiment Eastern Shore Maryland Infantry. He had been paid through 31 August 1864. This happened in Harper's Ferry, Jefferson County, West Virginia.9 On 23 January 1865 Jackson McComas was still sick in the Hospital in Sandy Hook, Washington County, Maryland.9 On 23 January 1865 Jackson McComas was adminstratively passed through the 1st Eastern Shore Maryland Volunteers and ended up in Company I of the 11th Regiment of the Maryland Volunteers.9 Between January 1865 and February 1865 Jackson McComas reappeared as present on his unit's muster roll somewhere.9 Between March 1865 and April 1865 Jackson McComas was present on the muster roll of Company I of the 11th Regiment of the Maryland Volunteers.9 He ended military service on 15 June 1865 in Baltimore, Maryland, as a Private in Company I, 11th Regiment of Maryland Infantry. He was last paid on 31 Dec 1864 and had $11.88 due to him. He was paid a bounty of $25, with another $75 due to him.5,6,7,8,9 He and Sarah McCullough appeared in the census in 1870 in Randallstown, Baltimore County, Maryland. Thomas McComas, George W McComas, and Charles F McComas were living in the household with their parents.10 In 1870 Jackson McComas was a farmer.10 In 1875 Jackson McComas was a teamster at 69 Buren St in Baltimore City, Maryland.11 In 1880 Jackson McComas was a laborer.12 He and Sarah McCullough appeared in the census in 1880 in 5th Ward, Baltimore, Maryland, listed as unemployed 9 months of the past year. Thomas McComas was living in the household with parents.12 In 1882 Jackson McComas was a laborer at 31 E Monument in Baltimore City, Maryland.11 In 1883 Jackson McComas was a laborer in Baltimore City, Maryland.11 On 12 June 1889, Jackson McComas was listed as an invalid in his Civil War Pension File, last serving as a Corporal in Company E of the 2nd Regiment of the Eastern Shore Maryland Infantry.8 He died on 20 December 1895.13,14 He was buried after 20 December 1895 at Hampstead Cemetery in Hampstead, Carroll County, Maryland, without any dates on the tombstone, in plot A15-01 in section G/lot 13 West of the old section of the cemetery.6 He died on 22 December 1895 according to the records of the funeral home, which also manages the Hampstead Cemetery. They have no original paper records remaining. They also show his name as "Dr. Jackson McComas".14

Thomas McComas, George W McComas, and Charles F McComas were living in the household with their parents.4 Between 1880 and 1881, Sarah McCullough filed requests for a pension based on her son James' service in the Army. She asserted that James died of starvation in 1864 while a prisoner of war, and that he had always sent her all of his pay. She also claimed that her husband Jackson abandoned her in 1873. (Note that they were shown living together in the 1870 and 1880 census.)
She also claimed that her only other children had all died (Eliza Jane born 29 Aug 1850, John Thomas born 18 Dec 1852, and William Henry born 1 Apr 1854). Note that her first child, Mary, would have been 35 at the time, assuming she still lived; Eliza Jane was married and aged 32; Thomas who might have been John Thomas, was 28 and shown living with his parents in the 1870 and 1880 censusrd; George W was alive and 26; and Charles F was alive and 24. There are no records for the child she listed as William Henry at all. Jackson McComas and she appeared in the census in 1880 in 5th Ward, Baltimore, Maryland, listed as unemployed 9 months of the past year. Thomas McComas was living in the household with parents.5

The wagon train was captured in Newtown, Virginia.4 After 29 May 1864 James A McComas was transferred (and records indicate that he survived) in Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia.5 On 23 October 1864 James A McComas was admitted to the prison hospital in Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia.6 On 2 November 1864 James A McComas was returned to the prison in Andersonville, Sumter County, Georgia.6 On 11 November 1864 James A McComas was transferred in Camp Lawton, Millen, Georgia.4 On 27 December 1864 James A McComas was transferred out of Company E of the 2nd Regiment Eastern Shore Maryland Infantry. He had been paid through 31 December 1863. Since he was still a prisoner of war, this was strictly an adminstrative action performed in Harper's Ferry, Jefferson County, West Virginia.4 On 23 January 1865 James A McComas was adminstratively passed through the 1st Eastern Shore Maryland Volunteers and ended up in Company I of the 11th Regiment of the Maryland Volunteers. Since he was still a prisoner of war, this was strictly an administrative action.4 He ended military service on 15 June 1865 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was last paid on 31 Dec 1863 and had $52.76 due to him. He was paid a bounty of $2.5, with another $7.5 due to him.4 In 1866, James A McComas appeared on list of Petitioners in Baltimore City, Maryland.7 He had 3 (2 still living) children in 1900.2
