Biography
Rev. William H Craumer was also known as William H Cramer. He was born on 3 September 1829 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,2 In 1849 Rev. William H Craumer was converted and received into the fellowship of the United Brethren Church at Ehrhart's Paper Mill a short distance north of Dallastown, York County, Pennsylvania.2 He married Catherine Sterner on 2 December 1852.2 In 1860 Rev. William H Craumer was a shoe maker.3 He and Catherine Sterner appeared in the census in 1860 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning $750 in real estate and $175 in personal property. Elias S Craumer, Lucinda F Craumer, Mary Jane Craumer, and Sarah Elizabeth Craumer were living in the household with their parents.3 Rev. William H Craumer registered for military service on 25 April 1861 as a Sergeant with Company A, 13th Infantry Regiment, PA (Union.)4 He ended military service on 6 August 1861 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. He mustered out from Company A, 13th Infantry Regiment, PA (Union) with Distinguished Service.4 On 24 January 1865 Rev. William H Craumer received as a licentiate into the Pennsylvania Conference, which was presided over by Bishop J. Markwood. in Baltimore City, Maryland.2 He was ordained on 26 January 1868 in York County, Pennsylvania, to the office of elder by Bishop J.J. Glossbrenner at a Conference Session help.2 On 26 January 1868, Rev. William H Craumer was appointed to the Dallastown and Jefferson circuit, which he served a few years, then the Liverpool circuit (6 years), Dallastown circuit (4 years), Manchester circuit (1 year), and labored some in the bounds of the East German Conference. During the early years of his ministry, he was a successful revialist. In his later years, he was frequently called upon to visit the sick, baptize children, and preach funeral sermons. He was very social in his natural disposition, by which he made and held many friends.2 In 1870 Rev. William H Craumer was a preacher with the U.B. Church.5 He and Catherine Sterner appeared in the census in 1870 in Manchester Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as owning no real estate and $400 in personal property. Catherine could read but could not write. Alice Craumer, Anna Lovina Craumer, Elias S Craumer, Emma A Craumer, Ida Lillie Craumer, Lucinda F Craumer, Margaret Craumer, Mary Jane Craumer, and Sarah Elizabeth Craumer were living in the household with their parents.5 In 1880 Rev. William H Craumer was a clergyman.6 He and Catherine Sterner appeared in the census in 1880 in Pine Grove, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. Also in the household were Alice Craumer, Anna Lovina Craumer, Harry Craumer, Margaret Craumer, and William H Craumer.6 His obituary in the New Oxford Item (June 9th) referred to him as a highly respected citizen of York.7 His funeral services were held in the First U.B. Church in York, PA, officiated by Rev. C.T. Stearn on 4 June 1899.2 Rev. William H Craumer died of heart failure (sudden death) on 4 June 1899, but had failing health for several years which had obliged him to retire from active ministry work. at age 69.2,7 He was buried on 7 June 1899 at Greenmount Cemetery in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1
