Johann Michael Klinefelter was born on 10 June 1736 in Florsbach, Gelnhausen, Hessen, Germany.1,2,3 He migrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Rotterdam via Portsmouth, England, on 14 September 1751 with a contingent of Lutherans on the "Duke of Bedford", captained by Richard Jeffreys. His future brothers-in-law Peter, Andrew, and Johannes GERBERICH, and his future uncle-in-law, Hans Michael GERBERICH, were on the same ship.4 He married Appolonia Gerberich about 1756 in Pennsylvania.3 He was named as executor in the will of Michael Homan, Sr., his brother-in-law on 11 January 1765. Additionally, Elisabeth Klinefelter was named as executor(s.) Johann Michael Klinefelter was the father at the baptism of Christina Jean Klinefelter on 3 March 1765 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.5,6 He was a sponsor at the baptism of Catherina Gerberich in April 1766 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.7,8 He registered for military service about 1776 in the Army as a Private in Captain John Miller's 3rd Company.1 He was listed in the tax record of 1780 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 100 acres, 60 of which were cleared, 2 horses, 5 cows, 6 sheep, which was evaluated at 495 pounds, for which he was assessed 3 pounds.9 He was listed in the tax record of 1783 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 380 acres, a distrillery, and an oil mill which was evaluated at 400 pounds. He married Maria Elisabeth in 1785 in York County, Pennsylvania. He was listed in the tax record of 1785 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 380 acres, 2 horses, 3 cows, 1 distillery, 1 gristmill, and 1 oil mill, which was evaluated at 389 pounds 9 shillings, for which he was assessed 2 pounds 17 shillings.9 He was listed in the tax record of 1786 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 380 acres, 3 horses, 3 cows, 1 gristmills, an oil mill, and a distrillery, which was evaluated at 455 pounds, for which he was assessed 3 pounds.9 He was listed in the tax record of 1787 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 380 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, 1 distillery, 1 gristmill, and 1 oil mill, which was evaluated at 470 pounds, for which he was assessed 3 pounds.9 He was listed in the tax record of 1788 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 380 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, 1 distillery, 1 gristmill, and 1 oil mill, which was evaluated at 470 pounds, for which he was assessed 3 pounds, 5 shillings.9 He was listed in the tax record of 1789 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 380 acres, 4 horses, 5 cows, 1 distillery, 1 gristmill, and 1 oil mill, which was evaluated at 510 pounds, for which he was assessed 3 pounds, 16 shillings, and 6 pence.9 He appeared in the census in 1790 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as having a household of 2 white males age 16 and older, 8 white males under 16, and 1 white female.10 On 3 February 1806 Johann Michael Klinefelter was executor of Catharine Gartman's estate.11 He died on 17 July 1807 in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, without a will at age 71.1,2 He was buried after 17 July 1807 at Fissel's Lutheran and Reformed Church Cemetery in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,2 On 29 July 1807, his inventory including about 65 bonds due to his estate from various persons ranging from 1805 thru 1817 totaling roughly 2,968 pounds which include debts from John Klinefelter, John Seitz, Peter Klinefelter, Jacob Klinefelter, John Baly, Jacob Baly, John Runkle Sr., John Runkle Jr., Jacob Markey, John Dever, Michael Klinefelter, and Frederich Gerberich; cash in hand of 11 pounds, 8 shillings, 6 pence; a sundried account book showing debt to him of about 41 pounds from various people including Michael Klinefelter, and John Runkle; various personal property items including but not limited to 30 hours clock, a table and 4 benches, 6 chests, 3 beds and bedsteads, leather, carpenter and shoemaker tools, 3 saddles, farming tools, 1 grindstone, 103 lbs of bacon, 18 cows, 16 sheep, 18 pigs, 3 horses, 3 wagons, 4 plows, large numbers of bushels of various grains and 120 pounds of butter.12 On 7 November 1809, a petition stated that he left a widow named Elizabeth, 15 living children, 2 deceased children, 8 living grandchildren, 1 deceased grandchild, and 1 living great grandchild, owned 219 acres in Shrewsbury Township adjoining lands of Jacob Heterick, Matthias Miller, and John Klinefelter, valued at $1760.76 and 168.5 acres in Hopewell Township adjoining lands of John McClary, David Anderson, Casper Sailor, and George Gimmel, valued at $876.20.13 On 20 May 1834, each of Johann Michael Klinefelter's 17 children, or their heirs if deceased, received an equal share of his estate, amounting to $42.06 and 1/2 cent each.14 Church in Florsbach Germany
