Peter Gerberich1
(12 August 1730 - 13 August 1805)
Parents
Biography
Peter Gerberich was born on 12 August 1730 in Spessart, Altfeld Bei Marktheidenfeld, Bavaria, Germany.1,2,3,4 He migrated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from Rotterdam (via Plymouth), Netherlands, on 14 September 1751 with a contingent of Lutherans on the "Duke of Bedford", captained by Richard Jeffreys, along with his brothers, Andrew and Johannes, and his uncle Michael. His future brother-in-law Johann Michael KLINEFELTER was on the same ship.1,5 After 14 September 1751, Peter Gerberich lived in Tulpehocken Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.1 He married Anna Margaretha Rudolph on 9 February 1755 in Atolhoe, Berks County, Pennsylvania.1,6,7 Between 1761 and 1766, Peter Gerberich lived in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the father at the baptism of Catherina Gerberich in April 1766 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,8 He was the father at the baptism of Susanna Philippena Gerberich on 8 August 1769 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,8 He obtained a land warrent for 10 acres adjoining land of Martin Miller, John Klinefelter, and Henry Fissel, to be held in trust for the Presbyterian & Lutheran Congregations by himself, Martin Miller, Andrew Smith and John Klinefelter in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.9 He was the father at the baptism of Susanna Gerberich on 4 August 1771 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,8 About 1771, Peter Gerberich lived in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania, with his cousin, Michael Gerberich.1 He obtained a land warrent for 75 acres.1 On 7 May 1773, Peter Gerberich had land surveyed known as "Gerbrick's Rocks" (46.15 acres from the 100 acres he would later warrant.)1 He was the father at the baptism of Georg Peter Gerberich on 29 July 1774 at St. Jacob's (Stone) Union Church in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.1,10 Peter Gerberich married Margaretha Berge between 30 March 1777 and 1 April 1778.1 He was listed in the tax record of 1779 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 70 acres, 2 horses, and 3 heads of cattle, which was evaluated at 20 pounds.11 He was listed in the tax record of 1780 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 100 acres, 40 of which were cleared, 2 horses, and 3 cows, which was evaluated at 550 pounds and assessed at 12 pounds.11 He was listed in the tax record of 1781 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 100 acres, 4 horses, and 6 cows, which was evaluated at 96 pounds (60 for the land, 6 each for the horses, and 2 each for the cows), for which he was assessed 2 pounds 8 shillings.11 He was listed in the tax record of 1783 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 1 house, 1 outhouse, and 100 acres, with 11 inhabitants (himself, wife Margaretha, and 9 children.)11 In 1783, based on the listing of 11 inhabitants on his tax record, only 12 of his 13 known children are accounted for (Joseph not yet born, Susanna Philippena died, Margaretha married, and 9 in the household). Therefore it appears that 1 additional known child was either married or passed away by then, and that assumes there are no unknown children.8 He was listed in the tax record of 1785 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 100 acres, 2 horses, and 2 horned cattle, which was evaluated at 156 pounds, for which he was assessed 1 pound 4 shillings.11 He obtained a land warrent for 100 acres.1 He was listed in the tax record of 1786 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 150 acres, 2 horses, and 3 cows, which was evaluated at 158 pounds, for which he was assessed 1 pound 2 shillings and 6 pence.11 He was listed in the tax record of 1787 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 150 acres, 2 horses, and 2 horned cattle, which was evaluated at 155 pounds, for which he was assessed 1 pound 2 shillings and 6 pence.11 He was a sponsor at the baptism of Margaret Merckel on 6 June 1788 at Friedensaal (Schuster's/White) Lutheran Church in Springfield Township, York County, Pennsylvania.12 He was listed in the tax record of 1788 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 150 acres, 2 horses, and 4 cows, which was evaluated at 159 pounds, for which he was assessed 1 pound 3 shillings.11 He was listed in the tax record of 1789 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 150 acres, 2 horses, and 3 cows, which was evaluated at 158 pounds, for which he was assessed 1 pound 4 shillings.11 He and Margaretha Berge appeared in the census in 1790 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, listed as having a household of 1 white male aged 16 or older (Peter), 2 white males under 16 (sons Georg Peter and Jacob), and 6 females (wife Margaretha, and daughters Maria Elisabeth, Catherina, Susanna, Barbara, and Eve). Barbara Gerberich, Catherina Gerberich, Eve Gerberich, Georg Peter Gerberich, Jacob Gerberich, Maria Elisabeth Gerberich, and Susanna Gerberich were living in the household with their parents.13 Peter Gerberich was listed in the tax record of 1 October 1798 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, as owning 1 house valued at $137.50 and taxed at 27.4 cents; as well as a halfstone barn and 160 acres of land, adjoining the lands of Abraham Hafler, valued at $640 and taxed at $1 and 21.6 cents.14 He and Margaretha Berge appeared in the census in 1800 listed as having in the household 1 white male 16-25 (son Jacob), 1 white male over 45 (Peter), 1 white female 16-25 (daughter Barbara) and 2 white females over 45 (wife Margaretha and either daughter Maria Elisabeth or Catherina). Barbara Gerberich, Catherina Gerberich, Jacob Gerberich, and Maria Elisabeth Gerberich were living in the household with their parents.15 Peter Gerberich died on 13 August 1805 in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania, at age 75.1,3,2 He was buried after 13 August 1805 at Fissel's (Jerusalem) Church in Shrewsbury Township, York County, Pennsylvania.3,2
