John Hare1,2
(5 June 1794 - 17 August 1853)
Parents
Biography
John Hare was also known as John Haer. He was also known as John Hair. He was also known as John Heer. He was also known as John Herr. He was also known as John Hehr. He was also known as Johannes Hare.3 He was born on 5 June 1794 in Carroll County, Maryland.4,5,3,6 He was baptised on 11 August 1794 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glen Rock, York County, Pennslyvania.3 On 1 September 1809, in Baltimore County, Maryland, John Hare was named as an heir in the will of Christophel Hare, his father, together with Jacob B. Hare and Magdalena Hare.7 On 27 May 1812, John Hare was a beneficiary of the will of Christophel Hare, his father, receiving a tract which seemed to read STOFFEL HEIRS LOTS but might have been STOFFEL HAIRS LUCK as there are subsequent land transactions which refer to CHRISTOPHER'S LUCK. It consisted of about 327 3/4 acres. It appears that title was not perfected until 1818.7 John Hare registered for military service on 26 July 1814 as a private in Captain Shower's Co., MD Militia, during the War of 1812. He ended military service on 1 December 1814. He was mentioned in the will of Elizabetha Caleboch, his mother, and appointed guardian of his brother, Jacob B. HARE, dated in 1815 in Baltimore County, Maryland.7 He married Catherina Hoffacker on 30 June 1816 in Baltimore County, Maryland.8,1 In 1819, John Hare sold land to Samuel Painter known as "Christopher's Luck" (40 acres.) He and Catherina Hoffacker appeared in the census in 1820 in Baltimore County, Maryland, listed as John HAIR, including in his household: 1M-10; 1M-45 (possibly Catherina's father); 1F-10; and 1F-26. In 1821, John Hare sold land to Leonard Masonier/Masemore known as "Christopher's Luck" (a 69 acre, 30 perches portion.) In 1821, John Hare sold land known as "Christopher's Luck" (219 acres) to Johannes Michael Hoffacker, his father-in-law, completely divesting himself of "Christopher's Luck." John Hare was listed in the tax record of 1823 in Baltimore County, Maryland. Assessment Records show that John paid $375 in taxes. He was assessed for 222 acres Christopher Lux, one horse, two cattle, two hogs, and house contents. Although records show that John sold all of Christopher's Luck by 1821, he must have repurchased some of it as he was taxed for 222 acres in 1823. Also, after his death, in 1854, there are chancery records of Samuel Hare vs John and Julian Jane for sale of real estate pertaining to Christopher's Luck. He and Catherina Hoffacker appeared in the census in 1840 listed as John Hare, with his household containing 1 male and 1 female between 39 and 50; 1 male between 14 and 19; 1 male and 1 female between 9 and 15; and 2 males and 1 female between 4 and 10. In 1850 John Hare was a farmer.9 He and Catherina Hoffacker appeared in the census in 1850 in District 8, Carroll County, Maryland, listed with an Amanda, age ?, in his household. and as having real property valued at $1,200. Sarah Ann Hare, Jacob Hare, Henry Hare, and Catharine Hare were living in the household with their parents.9 John Hare died on 17 August 1853 in Carroll County, Maryland, without a will at age 59.10,11,6 He was buried after 17 August 1853 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hampstead, Baltimore County, Maryland.6
