Biography

Lewis Walker Miller was born in January 1827 in Maryland.2,3 He married Elizabeth Ann Hahn on 22 December 1849 in Carroll County, Maryland.1,4 He appeared in the census in 1850 in District 6, Carroll County, Maryland, listed as having $1000 of real estate.5 In 1850 Lewis Walker Miller was a farmer.5 He and Elizabeth Ann Hahn appeared in the census on 1 August 1860 in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland, listed as having $1000 of real estate, $150 in personal property, and having been married within the year.6 He married Mary Magdaline Zimmerman after August 1860.7,1 In 1860 Lewis Walker Miller was a laborer.6 In August 1863 Lewis Walker Miller listed in the Civil War Draft Registration records for as a farmer born in Maryland. He is listed as class 2, meaning he was married, and living in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland.8 In September 1863 Lewis Walker Miller listed in the Civil War Draft Registration records as a farmer born in Maryland in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland.8 He and Mary Magdaline Zimmerman appeared in the census in 1870 in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland, listed as owning $1200 in real estate and $300 in personal property. Mary Alice Miller, Urias Zimmerman Miller, Sarah Miller, and Elizabeth E. ("Lizzie") Miller were living in the household with their parents.9 In 1880 Lewis Walker Miller was a farmer.2 He and Mary Magdaline Zimmerman appeared in the census in 1880 in 54th District, Carroll County, Maryland. Mary Alice Miller, Urias Zimmerman Miller, Sarah Miller, Elizabeth E. ("Lizzie") Miller, and Eliza Jane Miller were living in the household with their parents.2 In 1900 Lewis Walker Miller was a farmer.3 He and Mary Magdaline Zimmerman appeared in the census in 1900 in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland, listed as owning a farm with a mortgage. George Zimmerman Miller was living in the household with parents.3 As of 1900, Lewis Walker Miller and Mary Magdaline Zimmerman had 10 (6 still living) children.3 Before 8 March 1910 Lewis Walker Miller was a farmer.7 He died of paralysis (48 hours) caused by softening of the brain (1 year) on 8 March 1910 in Lineboro, Carroll County, Maryland, and was attended by Dr. E.R. Albaugh of Glen Rock, PA at age 83.10,7 He was buried after 8 March 1910 at Zimmerman's Mennonite Cemetery in Carroll County, Maryland.10,11 Research Note: Originally it was believed that this Lewis Miller and record ID 5735 were the same person, and that this Lewis' 1st wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth Hann (ID 5734). Further research indicated instead that there were 2 Lewis Millers, each married to an Elizabeth. The ages were about 5 years different. This Lewis was in Manchester, Carroll County, Maryland in the census records for 1850, 1860, and 1870, living near his 2nd wife in 1850, and having the known children listed in the other years. Another set of census records were found for the other Lewis during the same years in Westminster and Uniontown, Carroll County, Maryland, and Mountjoy, Pennsylvania, and included his parents (thought to have been this Lewis's parent) and members of the Hann family. By sorting records based on birth year, and birth year of wife Elizabeth, separating the two families became clear. As additional confirmation, there are 2 Civil War Draft Registrations from 1863, one for Manchester and the other for Baltimore County, with ages that match the two different sets of records. Summary is below.

Hare was a farmer.10 The name, Stoffell, that shows in the names of the children in the 1850 Census record raised some questions; however, in April of 2002 an old church ledger for St. Abraham's Lutheran Church was found. The ledger contained the baptismal records for all of the "Stoffel" children except John and Eliza. This proved their parents were Jacob and Elizabeth. Also, John was named John Staufel Hare when his marriage to Barbara Ebbert was announced. He executed a land record that he received 40 acres due to service in the War of 1812 on 10 July 1851.9 He executed a land record acquiring the tract from Henry Hoover on 13 June 1853. Hare was a farmer. In 1870 Jacob B. Hare was a farmer. He and Elizabeth Feather appeared in the census in 1870 in Wiseburg, Baltimore County, Maryland, listed as having in the household an unknown Martha, 14 (suspect she is the daughter of either William Franklin or Henry F). He owned real estate worth $2,000 and personal property worth $900.11 On 14 February 1871, Jacob B. Hare began receiving a military pension of $8 per month in Baltimore, Maryland.9 On 13 April 1871, Jacob B. Hare lived in Baltimore County, Maryland, where he applied for a pension from service in the War of 1812.3 On 13 April 1871 Jacob B. Hare appeared on the census in District 5, Baltimore County, Maryland, in the household of John W Alban and Angeline Stoffell Hare, his daughter, listed as a widower, retired, and unable to read or write.13 Jacob B. Hare made a will on 24 February 1882. The executor was George H Hare. The will also bequeathed $10 to the heirs of daughter Susanna. James is not mentioned as a son but is named as a son of daughter Susannah. So either son James was deceased by 1882 or the James, age 3, of the 1850 Census which is included as a son of Jacob, was Susannah's son, living with his grandparents. On 4 December 1883, Jacob B. Hare received his last pension payment.9 He died on 21 December 1883 in Baltimore County, Maryland, at age 87.14 On 20 December 1886, Jacob B.
