Hare and Elizabeth Feather. On 19 October 1850, Jesse Stoffell Hare appeared on the census in 11th Ward (now Waverly section), Baltimore City, Maryland, in the household of his parents, Jacob B. Hare and Elizabeth Feather.9 In 1860, Jesse Stoffell Hare appeared on the census, in the household of his parents, Jacob B. Hare and Elizabeth Feather. In July 1863 Jesse Stoffell Hare listed in the Draft Registry as a 24 year old single famer in Grave Run, Baltimore County, Maryland.10 On 29 February 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare enlisted in the Army for 3 years in Hampstead, Carroll County, Maryland.10 He was described as 5'6.5" tall with hazel eyes, brown hair and dark complexion. on 2 March 1864.2 He began military service on 2 March 1864 in Baltimore County, Maryland, as a private in Company C of the 1st regiment of the Maryland Cavalry. He enlisted in Hampstead for 3 years, and had been a farmer. He was paid a bounty of $60 with another $240 due to him.2 On 16 May 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare temporarily transfered to company I at Camp Carroll by order of Col Evans.10 On 28 May 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare arrested as deserter for leaving camp the previous night without a pass and sent to Col Woolley Provost Marshall, 8th Army Corps in Baltimore, Maryland.10 Between May 1864 and June 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare listed as receiving $100 of his bounty.10 On 7 June 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare transfered to company C from Company I by order of Col Evans in Washington DC.10 Between July 1864 and August 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare listed as receiving $100 of his bounty.10 Between July 1864 and August 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare listed as receiving $140 of his bounty with $160 still unpaid.10 Between November 1864 and December 1864 Jesse Stoffell Hare listed as charged $2.42 for loss of government propoerty.10 Between June 1865 and July 1865 Jesse Stoffell Hare was a company cook.10 He ended military service on 8 August 1865 in Richmond, Virginia, shown as being last paid on 31 Dec 1864 and having drawn $20 on clothing account. He is also shown as have being paid $140 of his bounty with $160 still due him.11 He married Eliza Jane McComas on 28 December 1868 in Baltimore County, Maryland.12,1 He and Eliza Jane McComas appeared in the census in September 1870 in Wiseburg, Baltimore County, Maryland, as having real estate worth $1,000 and personal property worth $300. Sarah E Hare and George Jackson Hare were living in the household with their parents.13 In 1870 Jesse Stoffell Hare was a farmer. On 6 March 1880 Jesse Stoffell Hare shown has filing for invalid status in his military pension file for Company C 1st MD Cavalry.14 He and Eliza Jane McComas appeared in the census in 1880 in 5th District, Baltimore County, Maryland. Jesse was listed as unable to read or write and Eliza Jane as unable to write. Sarah E Hare, George Jackson Hare, Samuel Emory Hare, Rovilla A. Hare, Howard F Hare, and Garafiela May Hare were living in the household with their parents.15 In 1880 Jesse Stoffell Hare was a farmer.15 On 24 February 1882, Jesse Stoffell Hare was named as an heir in the will of Jacob B. Hare, his father, named as Gessee, to share and share alike with his siblings, after discharging Jacob's debts. The other heirs were Emalene Hare, Elizabeth J Hare, Susan Alice Hare, Florence Hare, Mary Catherine Hare, Reuben Wesley Hare, Estella Hare, Martha Ellen Hare, Sarah Hare, Elizabeth Hare, Rachel M Stoffell Hare, Angeline Stoffell Hare, William Franklin Hare, David F Hare, John Stoffell Hare, and Eliza Hare. Jesse Stoffell Hare appeared in the census in 1890 in Grave Run Mills, Baltimore, Maryland, as having been a private in Company C of the 1st MD Cavalry from 29 Feb 1864 till 8 Aug 1863, and having incurred a gunshot wound in the back.16 He and Eliza Jane McComas appeared in the census on 25 June 1900 in 5th District, Baltimore County, Maryland, listed as having been married for 35 years, with neither one able to read or write, and owning their own farm without a mortgage. Samuel Emory Hare was living in the household with parents.7 In 1900 Jesse Stoffell Hare was a farmer.7 As of 1900, Jesse Stoffell Hare and Eliza Jane McComas had 8 (7 still living) children.7 In 1910 Jesse Stoffell Hare was a farmer. He and Eliza Jane McComas appeared in the census in 1910 in 5th District, Maryland, as owning a farm without a mortgage. Jesse couldn't read or write but Eliza could. Clarence P. Hare was living in the household with parents. Also in the household was Mimie P. Buchman.17 On 28 December 1914 Jesse Stoffell Hare was a farmer.6 He died of valvular disease of the heart on 28 December 1914 in near Hampstead, Baltimore County, Maryland, at age 78.18,5,6,8 He was buried on 31 December 1914 at Grave Run M. E. Church Cemetery in Baltimore County, Maryland.8
