James Preston was born on 25 September 1735.1,2 He married Mary Bond on 11 May 1756.3 In August 1774, James Preston posted a Surety Bond, along with Nathan Scott for Stephen Hill to get a tavern license. A Surety Bond is a guarantee of payment for applicable taxes.4 In 1776 James Preston was a signer of the Association of Freemen for Spesutie Upper.5 In 1778 James Preston was a signer of the Oath of Allegiance.5

No. 11.5,6 In 1775 Martin Preston signed the Association of Freemen for Gunpowder Neck (Gundpowder Lower Hundred.)7 In 1776 Martin Preston was a signer of the Association of Freemen for Bush River Lower.5 He registered for military service in 1776 as a 2nd Lietenant in Captain James McComas' Company in the 8th Battalion of the Harford County Militia.5,6 On 3 March 1778 Martin Preston signed the Oath of Fidelity and Support before John Love in Harford County, Maryland.8,5 He was listed in the tax record of 1778 in Spesutia Hundred, Harford County, Maryland.7 In September 1779, Martin Preston sold land consisting of about two acres, for a nominal amount (almost a gift of the land) to Father Sewall for the building of St. Ignatius Church in Hickory, Harford County, Maryland.6
